Well,after ten long months of being a very happy duck farmer, today I found my first egg! It was sitting there, not hiding at all, as if waiting for me to find it! I screamed with joy and my hubby thought I was hurt...oops. I currently have Khaki Campbell, Muscovy, pekin, Cayuga, and a Saxony list of my females. I don’t really care which one laid, but it would be exciting to have a clue. The one Muscovy had ducklings last spring before she came to us, but since, which was about two months ago, she has not laid. Like I said... I am not worried about if there are eggs elsewhere, etc..I’m just excited to see my first one in my presence. I know khaki are great layers..but, honestly my one khaki is kind of a pain in the neck..so if it is her, I might need to make her a thrown! . She sneaks in the barn at night, bringing the crew..eats a nibble, then gets them all to run back right out! And I have to proceed all over again...about eight times! Duck love! But, I thought I’d make a post because I was so excited..I’ll show a picture..the egg is no bigger than my chicken eggs, and very light in color, like my EE eggs...hmmm? Is that an indicator? Ok, thanks all! And, happy egg hunting!

Congratulations on your egg. I know you've been worried and waiting for a long time. You know what is even cooler? Watching it come out of the duck's butt! Took me about 2 years to actually witness that but it is pretty exciting!

Well. I think I know the duck layer! I have a Muscovy. Actually the mom of the ones I got two months ago. Well she was making a nice nest in my goat hay! So.... a few questions... I had to move her into the duck area for cleanliness and because Chris is due to build me a kissing pen there this week. So I took her with the exact hay she was nesting in at the same time and placed her in the spot where I found the egg yesterday. Then I put a bunch of hay on a higher box because I know she likes to be up. So. I realize this is not at all practical for me to be thinking of hatching eggs since we are downsizing ducks. With chickens you can take out eggs or leave in a number of eggs to hatch and number them based on the 21 day incubation period. Could I do that and perhaps just take out and leave in only a few? If we decide to not allow her to go broody at all. Do I do the broody breaker just like chickens? I absolutely realize this is nonsense to allow. But. Three ducklings would be nice. Especially Muscovy. So we shall see what Chris says when he gets home. He was fine with letting chickens go broody

Mine will sit on any amount of eggs as long as they get to sit. They aren’t picky. You’ll have to keep mom and ducklings separates from the rest of the flock 2-3 weeks maybe longer if they get snowed in and can’t be outside because mama ducks just don’t fend off attackers like a mama hen will and ducklings would be vulnerable to being picked on or killed.

Ok, so, do I need to keep her away from the other ducks in the barn at night? She actually to make a nest last night where our rabbit poop tray is...I saw all the hay, but Chris saw her up there this morning...I’m going to block it off so she doesn’t try that again. Yuck! So, is the hatch date the same for ducklings? 21 days?
