Got our first 6 chicks!

Me too!...we started off w/a tiny box until DH could get home w/a fridge box...which I cut down and made a "nursery"...

I like to see what others have for their set up. I always come away with good new ideas.

AND....I believe there is nothing better than supporting locally than using mail-order if at all possible!

I have found specific breeds, both chickens and turkeys online locally and they don't have the stress of going through the mail.

I watch the combs, the roosters combs get larger first usually but not always. Day olds can supposedly be sexed by their wings but I never tried it. There must be other ways too but DNA testing is probably expensive.

Congratulations on you new chicks. I am jealous. I have to wait until April 6 to get my 18 - 20 chicks.

I am fortunate that there are MANY feed stores in my area to get chicks from. Most of the stores are getting their first shipments in now. Between all of the stores there is a very good selection of breeds to choose from. I should be able to find most everything I am looking for within about a 10 day window. The only breed I am uncertain if I will find or not is Columbian Wyandotte. I have one 2 year old hen and love her markings and personality. I would like to get two more this year. I am going to start calling the feed stores tomorrow to see if anyone is getting them this year.
