I am looking to make a larger chicken coop out of a small, already owned grain bin. I have plans for summer weather which are relatively simple. But for winter, I don’t know how to insulate a space this large cost effectively. Hay? I have winters of up to negative 50 Celsius, and if I can’t keep them over the winter, what do I do with a medium sized flock? Any suggestions on insulation and heating options or how to get rid of a flock that size?

Eat them.

Sorry, no idea on how to insulate a grain bin.

Insulation and ventilation in those extreme temps is difficult in any coop.

Just since yesterday?!

Do you have a thread or article that shows this grain bin coop?

No. I’m new here, but I started out with guineas last May as a way to get a “taste” of what poultry keeping is like. So I’ve been through one winter with my flock.

I have a grain bin coop! I’ll be working on a second one in a month or so.

is the grain bin you planned to use the one that collapsed?
Yes, we have really strong winds in the spring and the grain bin was on the airstrip, so the bushes couldn’t protect it.

Oh that is a bummer:/
We have crazy wind too. Open fields on three sides doesn’t offer us much protection. Our bins are bolted down in thick concrete though.

Ours were recently moved because we sold a quarter of land so they weren’t bolted down yet.
