Temp hit below -50C (-58F) and the chickens survived.

Jennifer and Arön Toland, along with their neighbors, say this week’s nighttime temperatures have literally “bottomed out the Mercury,” with temps going far-beyond what their thermometers can handle.
“Last night was the coldest anyone can remember,” said Jennifer.
"Pipes froze, log cabins logs cracked, but miraculously the chickens survived in an unheated coop.”

I seem to remember reading in Jack London's short story, "To Build a Fire," that spit freezes mid-air at fifty below. That's how the main character knew how cold it was, he heard it crackle before it hit the ground. Brrrrr! Good chickies!

Wish the article had some photos of their coop, I'm curious as to the set up.

So the thermometer broke...and no one else in the area recorded the real temp.
They didn't follow up on the chickens either :(

Easy to contact them to find out. They said they respond fastest via their Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/EligukLakeLodge/
Anyone with a Facebook account want to give it a try? It'd be great to have them here describing what happened.
