Just started introducing our chickens to a Grandpa’s feeder, and wondering where it should live long term. Does it do better with overhead protection of some kind? I prefer having their feed out in the yard to see more of them, but this thing was $ and we hope to have it a long time. We’re adding goats and need to keep them out of the feed, plus trying to remember to keep open feed source out of the elements on rainy days isn’t my strongest quality.

Here’s Sunshine giving it a go. We’re on week 1 of training so it’s set to be open and not move at all while they get used to it (such a smart feature, I appreciate thoughtful animal training 🥰)

I've had mine get wet (due to poor run design) but the food in it stayed dry. But I'd put it somewhere dry if I could, partly because the birds won't want to get wet when they eat, and partly because the food might get wet if the birds ate out of it during a rainstorm.
