One last story... While I was gone visiting granny, hubs spoke with our neighbor that shares our fence line in the back corner. We share fence with 7 different neighbors... the whole backyard and half the front, which is why we don't have a huge predator problem here... or so I THOUGHT! Anyhow, this neighbor said he answered a knock on his door to a woman with a clipboard saying she was working with an organization that is GPS tracking mountain lions. She wanted him to know that lion P-247 had been in his backyard at 3am that morning.
I know they're around here... they have chased off the coyote pack that used to keep me awake summer nights yipping on the hill... but I never thought one would be prowling around in someone's backyard.
I let Scooter out the other night and he promptly took off after something and was chasing it all over the back. I heard the raspy barks of grey fox. They are fairly timid so no worries about Scoot and the chickens all securely locked up. haha The next morning, hubs told me the mountain lion story.

Now I will be worried to let Scooter out late.
Then thinking about it, I remember a strange incident that happened just before I left for granny's. I was letting Scooter out after dark, and when I opened the door to the side yard, I heard something move in the dry grass on the other side of the fence. My impression was of something large that moved away very quickly, and much more quietly than a deer. I questioned myself... maybe it wasn't really anything at all. Scooter didn't immediately run over to the fence and bark as I would expect if something was there, but my hair was standing on end, so... maybe.

Then Scooter trotted over by the fence, but not too close, and was sniffing the air. He kept turning back to me and back to the fence, moving slowly and being quiet... very uncharacteristic for this dog who loves to speed around everywhere. After about 20 seconds, he skipped his usual frenetic tour of the backyard and came to me to go back inside. Unusual.
The man that had the lion in his backyard also told hubs that our next door neighbor's cat went missing at the same time. Their front yard is on the other side of the fence with the suspicious activity. I wonder if I was really that close to a mountain lion.
