Oh wishing, i am sorry.Scooter had a second seizure at 8 this morning. It wasn't as long as the first, under a minute, but after, he started coughing, more coughing than the first time earlier. This time he coughed up bloody mucus.
So, off to the emergency vet. They don't know what is causing the seizures, tested normal for all the tests they did (blood and xrays). Neurologist said it could be brain tumors or meningitis (brain swelling) or even epilepsy, but that is unlikely due to the late onset. (Scooter is over 9yrs) The bloody mucus was from pulmonary edema, caused by the seizures. He was coughing while I talked with the neuro dr, and even obliged the man by hacking up a little blob of pink bloodiness. They kept him for treatment overnight. He was in an oxygen tent when I left since his respiration was high. They are giving him meds for both the edema and the seizures, and they are also starting him on antibiotics since he's at high risk of pneumonia and there was a little shadow on the xray. They want him to be stable before he comes home. Vet wasn't sure he'd survive another seizure without oxygen support, so treating the lung edema is the priority. I should get him back tomorrow.
I have spider veins and a couple that pop up. This one that just popped up looks like one. I wonder if that thing they just diagnosed me with can cause this .Granny, do you have varicose veins?
Any problem with the circulatory system can cause it, and I think seizures in such a small animal probably do that. In people, congestive heart failure often causes PE. The vet said it is not common, but it does happen, and since Scooter had NO symptoms of coughing before the seizures, it makes sense the two things are linked. He had the internist double check things too.Are dogs anatomy much different from us ? Why would a seizure cause edema in the lungs unless he aspirated ?
We are rural. No spraying out here. The one power pole we have on the property with an old transformer is weed whacked by the power company several times a year as needed. No spraying. People here don't like it!Does the city spray the weeds like around telephone poles Wishing ?
No, nothing different. In fact, I could tell by looking at him the second seizure was on it's way, so I think I would have noticed other things. Running around like normal, ate like normal, pestered to play with toys maybe a little less than normal, but he did more running around, so I didn't think anything of it.He hasnt been confused or acting different in any way?
I don't have a regular vet for him. We use the mobile vet at the feed store for shots. He's only been to the vet twice in 8 year, both for fox tails. Regular vet would have probably sent me to a specialist, so it was better to go straight there. Any other appointments, I will take him to the vet that put Chicory down. He was a good guy.this isnt your regular vet then? Em. vets charge 10xs as much
Thanks h2o. No bunny and no dog in the house tonight. seems empty.Oh wishing, i am sorry.
Thanks pro. Much as I try to harden myself to the inevitable, I always turn into a sobby sack of mush.Huge huge hugs wishing.
