Jake, do you know what a "non sequitur" is? You just made one. Again, reminding me of my son!

Exactly!! It is very hard to find the line between what they CAN'T do and what they WON'T do. That's why I keeping pushing, to find where the real line is. For example, driving- yes, driving on the freeway? no. And I will push no further. We will revisit that in a year if he hasn't done it on his own and see if I can get him across the line.

Quote: from Merriam-Webster:
non sequitur: a statement that is not connected in a logical or clear way to anything said before it
Starting at a very young age, we had talks about choices in how to react. For these guys, it's all or nothing, black and white, so we spent a lot of time discussing and practicing reactions in the gray area, in between all or nothing. So you just shut down instead of doing the task... what else could you have done? We made a scale 0 to 10. Zero was shut down, 10 was melt down. Then we tried to come up with other reactions that would fit in between. Most of this was in the context of getting along wit h his little brother. He had to learn there were many options he could choose from. I had him think what dad might do and try that. I sound all calm now, but there was a lot of stress in the house. Still is on some days. That line is almost impossible to find. temper tantrums usually get in the way. Most people dont even realize they are crossing it. Robert has decided to cope with this by shutting down. He will just refuse to speak to you. I understand him not wanting to drive because of his slow coordination responses . PT would help that if he would stick with it. Thats where the lack of motivation comes in.
