Granny's gone and done it again

I bought some bare root and it didnt make it. . Rocky clay soil. But I know its supposed to be hardy and like it dry. Probably my black thumb

I've never tried to start it. Some people have it growing around hereand it's pretty, but it doesn't spread naturally (isn't invasive).

Says it does well in zones 5-10, but doesn't say where those zones are

Couldn't find my garden book... that's what I get for cleaning up! Anyhoo, according to my book, there are several genus names that ice plants are classified under. They all like well drained soil (so that's probably what happened to yours, granny) and will be perennial if suited to your area. The zone thing drives me nuts, because my favorite Sunset western garden book uses different zones than whatever other system is used on seed packets and stuff, so I'm not much help there.

genus name used to be Mesembryanthemum (that's the one along the coast here) but is now divided into 6-7 other genus groups that you could look up faster than I can type.

shale! you need a pile driver instead of a post hole digger! My mom said she used to swim in the Chesapeake Bay. That was a loooooong time ago!

good info here. If I had read it first I would have know it wouldnt grow here in my clay.
Have a lot of clay here too, but it's spotty. Early Spanish build their Catholic missions out of adobe all up and down the state. We just call them adobes.
