yepper as the chicks get older it sort of disingreates into the dirt. BUT I don't have to worry about them eating dirt instead of starter when I first get them

as in toilet paper ?

well, I think the paper is secondary anyway. the sterile dirt must be the thing. They still get exposed to cocci but not until they are much older and can handle it better.

until they eat to much dirt and expire, had a few do that the first year.

Not where I live, I think it rained quite a bit in the south. We had some weather move through a day or two ago, just thunderstorms.
