That sounds like every teachers' lounge I've ever been in and every employee lounge in the private sector too. As a teacher, I'd rather have any discretionary money go to support my classroom because that's why I was there. What the what. We have a newer school. Our staff lounge is chit. Cramped with old appliances. It's less than half the size of a classroom. There are 2 microwaves and must be from the early 90's. It's possessed. The fridge is one of those tiny ones for apartments. Not big enough for all the staff we have. And that's the only lounge we have.
He puts together control panels at a small company that makes woodworking (joinery) machines. Since he's just gone up to full time, they are going to ask him to do a lot of other things, starting with helping put together the manuals that describe the machines. What kind of job did he get?
All the the sports and extra curriculars here are supported by parent booster clubs that fund raise all year. Very little, if any, of the school budget goes to extra curricular. CA even voted for the lottery to cover all the extras at school, yet booster clubs are about the only way to have them. When my #2 ran cross country we had to pay $150 each year plus I drove for almost every meet and helped fund raise... and that's just for cross country running! Not a lot of equipment needed. So I always wonder where all the money goes. I don't think property tax should be the basis for school funding. There's got to be a better way. The whole point of public education is to give each kid, no matter their income level, the tools and opportunity to achieve and better themselves. The way it works now is almost like a caste system. We always bought extra anyway, just in case. I'm happy to help, as long as I know where it's going.
I lost Wishing's quote, but our little school is pretty broke. It's a K-12 right between two HUGE school complexes. I think most kids transfer out for the better sports/extracurriculars. Over 40% of folks in my ZIP live beneath the poverty line, and I can't imagine they're much wealthier just one town over.
