I've got a bit of a conundrum right now. I agreed to buy all of the d'uccles that hatch from a gal who bought in eggs. She also set some of her own eggs in this hatch.

After a little while, she let me know that her own birds were sick with a respiratory issue. Now, the eggs are popping and she knows her birds at the least have ILT. This cannot be transmitted through eggs, but can be transmitted through infected birds, equipment, droppings, dander, feathers and people not practicing good biosecurity.

So, she obviously really wants me to buy these and I would love to buy them, but I don't want to take unnecessary risks...what do ya'll think? She doesn't intend to touch the chicks and wants me to pull them from the bator, myself.

Edit to add: She just got a call from the lab vet. They also have MS. So, I won't be taking the chicks as MS is transmitted via eggs.

You made the best decision. I had a close call with some pullets I got from a breeder north of here. Got them home and the next day one was sneezing. Fortunately I had kept the new birds isolated in the garage, and I removed them from the property soon after. Breeder sent a bird in for test and came back ILT. Those 3 adorable little pullets were the first birds I ever killed, but it had not spread to my flock, so I was not going to keep them. Breeder traced the problem to some new birds he had brought in and lax biosecurity on 3 fronts. A perfect storm. Luckily, because I caught it early, he did not have to cull many birds, and kept the disease from spreading. If the rest of my flock had caught it, I would have kept them and had a closed flock.
