Camp how old is the pup? The lady I worked for had a pair she rescued. They killed her 20 something chickens and tried to kill the 400+lbs pot belly pigs she had. They were only about 6 months when I seen them. Id be careful when introducing it to animals.
I know the lady’s mom have chickens, but not sure why it’s penned up now. We had seen it crossing the road to play with cattle.
How trainable are you? What sort of fencing do you have? A GP can climb a 4' fence with ease, not sure a 5' would be much of a challenge without that 5' mark being hot. If you are doing field fence make sure it is knotted or woven NEVER welded. Penning the dog all day wouldn't be ideal. Not much better than what it has now. Given you are running a camp for kids, seems to me ANY dog would be a legal liability if it can come in contact with the kids. GPs aren't generically aggressive toward people but they will protect what they view as their responsibility to guard.
We don’t have dog pen at the moment. The chicken run/pen is 4ft welded wire. Monday and Friday are the biggest high traffic days, and only a few hours. I didn’t say it, but that’s the concern I was addressing when I said penning for the day.
Maybe I could try him with a few small groups that are “friendly” with us, like board training this weekend, then girls retreat? We also have a few events in April. If he would stay with the ducks, that would be ideal. I know GP are prone to roaming in a radius, as part of their protection tactic. I think we have enough land to accommodate that, and only one neighbor to worry about. We could reinforce the fencing on his side.
