well, I think the paper is secondary anyway. the sterile dirt must be the thing. They still get exposed to cocci but not until they are much older and can handle it better.
I think the point of the sterilized dirt is that any coccidia have been killed so the chicks aren't exposed at all.

and cocci dont bother them past 9 weeks or something like that.
 
then why dont everyone keep them off the ground til they are older. Cocci could be a thing of the past. Wouldnt it eventually be gone from the soil?
I think the spores can last a long time. And maybe other wild birds carry and spread it.
