Welcome to BYC too! Good luck to your future flock! Sounds like you are wanting to keep them for pleasure and eggs.

I would recommend Easter Eggers. These are my ladies. They all lay blue. The white ones were bred this year. Hoping they will lay green.
Aww...love your girls. And thank you for the kind welcome. Easter eggers are what I want. I am hoping to find someone in my area that has them after my coop/run is built. I want silkies and other breeds for enjoyment, but Easter eggers are what I have had my eye on for eggs. I once had a Rhode Island Red that sat on my knee and slept. I want, at least, one hen of their breed...maybe two. Domineckers...not sure how it is spelled lol...I want a couple of hens since they are good sitters. They are pretty chickens. I am not sure of their lifespan, though.

I have several breeds in mind I want to have, but my husband won't eat fertilized eggs, so I will have to keep hens only in a coop and run. I will have to figure that out lol. I want them to free range some for their happiness.

The Welsummers sound like great chickens. I will check them out. I have never heard of them. I will look them up tonight. I might pass on sexlinks if they are short-lived. I get too attached, ha.

First of all, your husband has no need to worry about fertile eggs. I know that a lot of people hear myths about them, but fertile eggs are like any other eggs. No difference in texture or taste. In fact, I get no blood spots in my eggs and they are all fertile. Enough about that though.

Dominique (is spelled as so). They are okay hens. But for the best sitters/broody hens, go with Silkies or Cochins. Orpingtons and Wyandotte's as well.

He has already demanded no roosters lol. I would eat the eggs. He is just strange about thing like that lol. I didn't know silkies were good sitters. I love silkies, especially the white ones. I will get the other colors, though. I will go with the other three you mentioned for sitters too. Thank you for the breed help. I need to figure out what month to buy from hatcheries. I was checking some out in the spring on prices, and they were mostly sold out. It was early spring. I just got a Murray McMurray catalog in the mail. I still might can find someone with the breeds I want in my area. I live in a rural area.

I love the 3 breeds you suggested. The Wyandotte has a beautiful feathering pattern. I am definitely going to add them in with my flock.

You do not need that many broody breeds. Trust me, it can be a pain when you get attacked by a broody every morning. Just a few Silkies will do. They, along with Cochins are by far the two broodiest breeds.

One thing to consider is that Silkies have crests and a vaulted skull. They can become bully targets really easily. Bigger breeds like Wyandotte's tend to be quite bullies. Although it makes them great broody mamas, it can be dangerous as well. One hard bonk on the head for a Silkie can be dangerous. They are also more prone to get Marek's and I believe also wry neck.
