Well ... there are 4 full-length movies to tell the story. It's based on a trilogy of books by J.R.R. Tolkien plus a prequel, thick books! I read most of them in high school and they weren't even required reading.

I was Class of '70.

Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit books, had a huge cult following in the '60's and early '70's. And yes, Harry Potter was the darling of the younger set. I read all those too, but I was much older. I wanted to see if they were appropriate for my kids. They became a guilty pleasure for me, but as for my kids, ... I decided not.
