My husband was sent home with that apparatus. Open heart surgery. They cut him open all the way down the front, practically. Took his heart out. Put him on a machine that pumped his blood. Worked on his heart. Mitral Valve. He was lucky he had enough skin to work with otherwise he would have had pig skin to repair it. Put his heart back in. Had to hold a pillow tight while he breathed into that thing. I had one sent home with me too once. I've had so many surgeries I don't remember which one.Yes. They told me the same thing after prostate surgery. They kicked me out of the hospital 2 days after prostate surgery so I wouldn't get pneumonia in the hospital. They sent a device home with me to breath through to make my lungs empty. Granny I don't know which was worse. Being cut open and stapled shut or breaking ribs in a fall. Either way sucking air in as much as possible and them pushing as hard as possible to get it out hurt like no one who hasn't done it can understand. The breathing comes with some many medical procedures to prevent pneumonia. Not just falls and ribs. Standard operating procedure about anytime being in the hospital and cut on.
