Granny's gone and done it again

Hm. I don't recall anybody in my family being pleased about my ability to spell, or even caring. It was just easy and fun.

Maybe it was fun because it put me ahead of my classmates. My teachers were pleased, and I liked that. Well. All but one. And I didn't like her either so I aced the tests just to, er, spite her. She thought members of my race were naturally lazy and stupid, so I had an attitude of, "Well, I'll show HER!"

Another thing I noticed going from public school to private was at public school we were supposed to speak loud but put the correct emphasis on the correct words. In private school they talked very loud but In a monotone voice
In the Parochial school I attended a lot of attention was put on speaking proper english because it was the trade language.

People do judge you by the way you speak. It's probably not as extreme here as in, say, England, but speech patterns can certainly limit one's ability to earn an income or to climb the socioeconomic ladder.
