Granny, I told DH the questions he should ask about the injection. It's quite new. The Dr is a very good Dr and I have a lot of faith that he will do what is best for DH- to the best of his knowledge.
He likened it to an oil change in a car. Hyaluronate is found naturally in knee joints and acts as a lubricant and shock absorbent (diminishing inflammation and pain). He removed the fluid that was on his knee and then added the hyaluronate with a needle. His knee was swollen and had quite a bit of fluid on it.
This will take longer for the pain to go away then with steroids. He can come back for another injection in 6 months if needed. Because it's fairly new, the side affects they are aware of are like injection site soreness. People try this if steroids are short lasting but you don't want to go for knee replacement.
You can ask your Dr about it, he may give you an injection in the shoulder.
I don't know if it's a man made substance.
