I havent done it yet but Grannys making plans.... I think people that keep chickens in the house are a bit ,well, obsessed. not my business. i am planning on buying a pr. of seramas . actually my friend is supposed to do a pay pal for me tonight or in the morning. I think he is just pretty much just charging shipping. 50 dollars total. he offered eggs also but i think i am going to pass. its just the wrong time of the yr. so they need heat to 40 degrees in the winter. about the size of a fist and i am wondering what kind of mess they would be in a brooder in the house till spring. they are 3-4 months old. i wouldnt have to ask anyone to care for them and it may brighten my day. i dont like the messes though and if it gets to be too much i guess i can put them out even if its cold. not sure about that . my brooder floor is wood and that makes it a bit hard on odor control. i dont want to clean a cage every day. has anyone done this before ? will it stink or bad to be breathing?

Could you put sand in the brooder? I have sand in my run and coop and it's great for smell, and not dusty at all. Of course, I'm just about as far south as you can get without standing in water... But in the house sand should be warm enough.

I love the thought of house chickens. Doesn't seem any different than parrots or anything else.

not in these i dont think. they are framed with 2x2s and hardware cloth . good idea though

maybe if i could get someone to panel up the sides ?? it would have to be tight and deep to keep them from scratching it out

You could even use cardboard to panel up the sides. Cardboard and masking tape are my favorites for emergency cage building.

I have been using rice hulls in my bantam coop. I really like them because they seem to dry out the poop well and I can scoop it out with a cat litter scooper. The hulls are less dusty than shavings, but if there is much flapping, they will fly around a bit. Easy to vacuum up though.

You will love the Seramas. More fun and friendlier than any other caged bird I've been around. They'll tame down quickly and be your best friends. The cockerel will also be your alarm clock!

Ohhhh I want some Seramas! So lucky! I used sand in my brooder I made in the office and the scratching and running around in the sand covered everything in dust in my office. Loved it for no smell AMD easy clean but so dusty for in the house.

Suzie, what kind of sand did you use? Just curious. Husband bought the "better quality" from our local sand pit and I'm afraid it's too fine to be good grit. I'm thinking of adding a layer of coarser sand, or small pea gravel.

well, i realized i cant use sand anyway. this is a homemade brooder and it would just come out where the door is. the door is the only access so i couldnt get a tray in there. hmmm. i talked to the breeder a bit ago and he is insisting i take some eggs as well. oh boy. money will be sent tomorrow and chicks will be sent next monday. i have had tons of trouble with my po and they are always a day late. i have never incubated any eggs but my own.

wish i had a home depot. we do have lows but just so many times you can look at the same thing. lol
