It's weird. Once the animal is dead, I'm fine. Not squeamish, can handle the blood and gore. I just can't do it. Maybe I need to be around more practical people. Everyone around here will look at me with sad eyes and I fall apart. Few chickens I've euthanized, I've had to wait until I was alone.
I thought that it would be easy. But when the have their own little personalities and come running to you when you call them, I just can't do it. That's the reason I've purposely made myself not get to know them like I did the first ones. Its a natural sad feeling to take the life of an animal. It just shows that you have a heart. When I killed my ten point that's mounted now, it was the happiest most wonderful, saddest days of my life. I always thank the Lord for giving me food after every kill. It's weird. I know eating my own chickens would be better all around, but they all have names!! If it came down to it, to feed my family, I know I could do it myself. Just being a weenie because I can.![]()
we haven't eaten any of ours yet either. not that it would bother me, its just they usually keep laying right up until they croak.I know eating my own chickens would be better all around, but they all have names!! chicken and dumplings are num ! LOL Fridge is scrubbed enough that I would feel comfortable bringing it in to finish. Im not satisfied that the seal is as clean as it could be and want to go back over it but it is very cold out.. found a couple things out while I was out there. My Lakenvelder got his butt whopped . lot of blood and missing/broken tail feathers . I plucked the worst bleeders out and added him to my collection in the pole barn. I found the hen that JUST started laying the green eggs gone broody . she had 20 eggs under her.. I tossed all but 3 and went to the other coop and got the 4 polish eggs. They have been there for a while and were very cold but I marked them all and gave them back to her. I looked at the tolbunt roo better, eyes are perfect. contracting fine . round pupils . no scaling anywhere. All the chickens in both coops look fine and healthy..
