Your secret's safe with me! Hope it feels a little better tomorrow. Driving carpool home from school today, we briefly got stuck behind a rear end accident. When we had a chance to pass, my older son recognized a classmate as the driver of the car with the smooshed hood. Luckily he wasn't hurt, but unfortunately it reaffirmed my teen's reluctance to get his license (or even practice driving). Guess I should be grateful in some ways, but I have explained very clearly that mommy will NOT be driving her 40 year old son to and from work, so he'll have to start sometime. We'll give it another year.

thanks, wishing4wings. dont think it will but heres to hoping

my son will turn 21 in 9 more days. he has no wish to learn how to drive. I would be as well off teaching a chicken to dance. lol

i dont know if i can stand myself for that long. didnt i just go through this not too long ago when my water heater went out? i will have to go to the store before monday and stock up on some lunch meat. yum I was a little concerned that my post shouldnt be here because not much chicken talk going on. not that i dont want to talk turkey but theres just so much i can say about a few laying hens that i dont even get to see anymore.

so i did ask and found out that I can pretty much run my mouth with out the guilt. as long as it dont involve politicking and profanatating we are all good. so, i have to hitch my DONKEY out of this chair and get the boys together for a VOTE to see what lunch meat will be on the menu this week.

Granny I'm so sorry to hear that! I work food service for a summercamp and have SO MUCH food in the freezer. I wish I lived close by and could send it to you.

Here's a picture of my newest pullet, Evangeline. My 5-year-old is entering her in the local fair. I've never put a chicken in a fair; I entered houseplants once, but every single entry won either first or second place. :p I at least hope it's fun and that we learn a few things for next year.

I mean frozen casseroles and whole dishes. Just pop 'em in the oven and DONE. not that it matters, haha.

We picked up five pullets from the auction last month and no one could tell us anything. The folks over on the breed/gender thread guessed Speckled Sussex, which I think is probably right.

Eloise is the friendliest, but she's missing her tail? I have no idea, she was like that when we got her.

speckled sussex thats right. no not that it matters but boy that sounds good. lol too bad they arent sold like that around here. how long have you had eliose? could be genetic or may still grow back. i have one like that and it was picked bloody when it was a chick . i think the follicles were damaged. or, could be mixed with a tailess bird. eggs will tell you if that is the case.

We got them all at the same time: two with tails, two with no tails, and one with more penciling than speckles (lost her Monday to a predator). That was about two weeks ago. I saw some of the auction guys grabbing birds by the tails, so maybe something like that? I've only had chickens for a month so I'm clueless on just about everything. I guess when they molt we'll see what grows back.

if its been a month you can look in the nether region and you should see the feathers trying to come in. you would also see scaring or a smooth surface

actually, I kinda do want to talk turkey. thanksgiving turkey that is. I have many, many questions. was thinking of raising ONE next spring for thanksgiving dinner. I know absolutely nothing about them except for the fact that i like em juicy. and this goes right down to cooking them . I would guess they are cleaned just like a chicken only with a longer neck. my favorite. Breeds, care , age its all french to me. I would like a hen for the simple reason that I am totally terrified of them. I have been around one turkey in my life and i didnt like him and he didnt like me. we ran for hrs. ( or so it seemed) around and around that old farm house we went until my uncle had laughed enough and unlocked the door. I was 14 yrs. old and ever since then turkey has tasted soo good ! including that one. so, do you think i can do it? would it have to be by itself? will a hen do as well as a umm, boy turkey? is it possible for me to raise a butterball or are there secret tricks to make them come out like that? and would a 59cent a lb. turkey end up costing me 2 dollars a lb.? the only part I know i can do is chop, chop. I am Granny Hatchet ! I am a chicken
