Lisa, thanks for the welcome back :)
Sorry about all of your babies not hatching but it sounds like you've got a lot of them anyway. Is it hard to keep up with all the details of what each age group needs, or is it like second nature? I'm proud of myself for keeping food, clean water, crunched shells and grit available... not to mention poo monitoring and coop/run cleaning. That seems like a lot at times, lol.

Wishing, love your pretty flock, and oh that lil roo is a heartbreaker! My BF in HS was named Lola so I'm fond of the name, too. It's actually on my potential name list (does anyone else have one of those?).
Thank you sunset, it was hard losing all those fully developed chicks. These were my brother-in-laws eggs that I was trying to hatch for him because his flock is getting old. He will just have to bring me more eggs up the next time he visits. And yes it does get hectic with all the difference ages of chicks. That was why I was wanting all 12 of the silkie eggs to hatch. I have a batch of 24 eggs in the incubator with a hatch date for 2 weeks out. I wanted the silkies to be bigger by the time the regular chicks hatched out so I could attempt to brood them together. My last batches I did that with. I brooded the 6 week olds with the 4 week olds, everything went well.

Hey granny, need to borrow your line except I will trade out Nana for granny. This Nana gone and done it! Remember me telling you about how much I hated this time a year because the thawing & freezing causing black ice. Well I went and done it again this year. Foot went out from under me, down I went with my knee twisted sideways flat on my bad back. Tweeted the knee a bit, but tweaked the back a lot. Currently camping on the couch at the moment. Won't be cooking no dinner tonight, so hubby will have to fend for us. My back is so sore everyday as it is, I just didn't need this.

ooh, ouch ! do you need xrays? cant be too careful with that stuff. the eggs that didnt hatch, you said they came from old hens? that would be the problem right there if his flock is too old

Oh it would? Why would that effect the fully developed chick from not hatching? Didnt go in for Xrays, thought I would wait and see how I felt tomorrow.

I am not 100% sure how. I did read on it before. I think it has to do with the parent birds not having enough nutrients to support a strong chick. dont quote me.
