Quote: Funny story. So we have this "dark skinned" girl who works here. She's creole. And she was raised under a rock, so she doesn't know anything. I've know her for about 13 years, and she has always said "crackers!" when something messes up or goes wrong, and sometimes she would call a person that.
We told her not to. She didn't stop, so we gave up. She sounds a little like a parrot when she does it.
So the other day I'm cooking for a group and she wanders in and says she finally knows what a cracker is. "It's from cowboy days. The person with the whip was the cracker."
And I dropped everything out of my hands and hollered "it's what black people call white people and it's not nice!!"
Her eyes got big. So that's why we've been telling her to stop saying that? Yes, yes, yes.
That's interesting. 20 years ago, quite a few of my black students would call each other the N word in a friendly way. Practical theory is overusing a word diminishes it's power. Can't imagine it happening so much today... everything is labeled "racist" in middle school now! I was thinking something of the same case with "cracker" but there's more to it. More history than I thought.

This is interesting, but she should still stop if it offends you. I told my students to stop too.
Only roo I have. They keep laying in this cold weather.

Very interesting article! While reading I did remember the "poor" part of it. I guess I'm just not big on labels, especially if they are meant to distinguish race or socioeconomic status. It's the same reason that I call new mamas by name instead of "the baby's mom" or introduce someone as John, Jamie's husband instead of Jamie's husband John. Identity and self-worth are sacred to me.imma see if I can find Dannas phone # BBI'm still kickin,,just not too high..sorry i worried everyone...Im good hu ? hahahaaaaHow'd you do that?? Only 12 minutes! Good to hear from you, Danna! Hope you feel like kicking high soon.
