Sorry Neatstuff
. Got distracted by Warriors basketball game and the Voice. Been switching back and forth!
I had trouble with jays coming coming in the coop and eating eggs. Crazy smart birds. We tried to think of ways to exclude them and let the chickens have access, but no success. The jays are just too intelligent. We ended up shutting the door to the run and trapping the jays inside. Hand caught them and let them sit in a cage for awhile trying to scare them out of returning. Didn't work, so we relocated a couple of them. We caught them together which was good since they were a pair.
Starlings are smart too, but not quite the same way. You could try hanging a fringe or strings of beads across the door, and then teach the chickens to push through. (That could take awhile.) Are the starlings after the food? They make pressure activated feeders where the chickens have to step on a treadle to open the lid. Those are good if you have rats and mice problems too. Put an owl or raptor statue above the opening, might scare them from coming in?? Or hang old CDs or mylar strips. Starlings are nonnative, invasive species. In CA, they are not protected and the bird rescue folks won't waste resources on them.
This site has good ideas, but I would never pay those prices. You can buy a beach ball at the dollar store and make your own evil eyes!

If you got mites, get on it! They are horrible. If you have any questions about treating, I can share my horror stories.
Sorry I missed you.
Keep us updated on Starling Wars!
Warriors won! Set the record for longest string of home game wins. Most ever!
And no one here cares!
