Had a little adventure while picking up #2. Almost to the school, on a 2 lane straight part of the highway, with lots of cars, rush hour, so they are all rushing. There are open fields on either side of the road for a couple of miles, so it is a favorite hangout for hawks. Zooming along, and up ahead I see a hawk get too close to a car, get hit, and go cartwheeling through the air, just missing the car in front of me. The bird landed on the side of the road and just sat there, stunned. No way to stop with all those cars so I went to get #2 and hoped to grab the bird on my way back... if it didn't get run over first. We were back within 5 minutes, hawk still there, and we pulled into a fortuitously located driveway right across from the bird. Grabbed blankets out of the back, and 3 minutes later, risking life and limb, we made it across to the hawk. Meanwhile, 2 other people had pulled over on the bird side, but they were clueless, so I said to stay back, don't scare it into traffic, which they were happy to do. Now you would think that with 3 cars pulled over along the highway with emergency flashers on, that people would slow down a little at least. Well, not in California. Those 5 seconds it would take to slow up a bit are just to precious to the big dumb jerks. So I covered the hawk with my handy blankets, one of the people who stopped was on the phone with bird rescue, so I gave her our location, and we gathered up our stunned bird friend, and re-risking life and limb, recrossed the road 4 minutes later (dang bass-turds won't even let up on the gas a little
) and deposited the hawk in the back of the car to await the bird rescue lady. About 20 minutes, and several struggling bird attempts at escape, the cavalry arrived and she took the hawk! yay! Got a call about half an hour ago from the rescue. It is a female juvenile Northern Harrier and seems to be more stunned than injured YAY! so they expect to release it in a day or two.
