Grapes?

Can I give me little chickees grapes if I got them up? They are only 4 days old- the chickees that is.

Yes, it is Ok to give grapes as a treat. Just be sure to have the extra grit available. Chicks (and chickens) acquire a taste for foods like we do. They may not like the grapes today, but they may in a week.

It is so funny to watch my adult hens when I give them something new. They just stare at it and discuss it awhile before one brave soul decides to try it.

What about bread? I want them to get used to me and think of me as someone with treats, but they just get really freaked out. Do I just put it in the food tray, chop it small, or just break it up a little? Thanks.

I start my baby chicks on bread to get them used to me. I hold the bread in my hand and let them peck at it. You have to be patient with them, but once they catch on, they will mob you every time you get near.

As with everything else, just don't overdo it. Unfortunately, I have some pigs in the bunch and they are always the first to go after the bread and it is hard to get near the others because of them.

Well,I guess they decided they liked the grapes. I heard a commotion and looked in and they were tugging away the grape pieces from eachother and fighting over them and chasing, so my son went out and found three worms and it started with them...it was soo funny. However as I must admit as a vegetarian(I don't think we taste like chicken, btw

) it felt a little mean handing them the worms. If they get it on their own it is one thing, but I like worms....

I'm with you on the worm thing. Fine if they get their own, but... My son likes to dig worms for our girls so I just let him do it and keep my opinions to myself. Whenever I peel a cucumber or make salad I have a bag just for "chicken salad" where I put the veggie scraps which I give to the girls. They seem to be particulary fond of tomatoes and sweet red peppers. Just remember that what they eat you eat so if you don't want your eggs to taste like onions or garlic don't give them these scraps. We love asperagus, but they don't. Go figure!

Oh yeah, those stale pieces of bread and tag ends of loaves!!! Hand feeding all will make your chicks much nicer ladies.
