I'm not even going to call this a necroscopy; I was in a huge rush due to outside events but wanted to see if I could at least guess at cause of death. She appeared healthy around one to two hours prior.
Details: Dead in a spasm-like position (on side, both legs rather extended) in favorite dusting spot. Distended, fleshy, egg shaped protrusion from clean vent. Mouth revealed small amount of brownish-clear mucous.
Protrusion, which I later discovered was a soft shelled egg:
I plucked the breast/stomach and there appeared to be bloody fluid darkening the bottom-right (my right as I looked at her) of her body:
Opening her up revealed a lot of fluid, clearish pink:
Large red mass (unsure what I'm looking at here):
More photos as I tried to get to her reproductive areas (gizzard removed):
Is this another fatty liver scenario, assuming the organ in the middle of the last photo is the liver, coupled with a difficult egg/calcium deficiency that may have prompted the rupture?
Open to any thoughts. She was a year and several months old; my top hen. Latest of three deaths in my Hoovers Buff Orpington flock since I started last year.
