GRAPHIC Need some help Duck attacked by Dog

So sorry @Quacking Pigeon how is she doing? Only thing I would change with what Squiggs said is covering the wound with gauze it will stick. If you decide to cover use no stick pads then wrap in gauze then vet wrap. Def keep flies away if you have them in Australia.
Well thankfully it’s not summer yet as flys are just everywhere. They go on your face and you can hear them buzzing near your ear.

I’m not sure how the duck is as it’s 4:01am, I’m an early riser. I’ll make sure I keep you guys updated.

Great advice so far. Is a vet a possibility?

Get a baseline weight ASAP.

If she were mine I would remove feathers around the wound (I believe they call this making a margin). Then I would flush very well with betadine and saline, or chlorhexadine and saline, trim off any dead tissue. Not sure what I would put on the wound, but maybe @Tesumph can suggest something.

This I would wrap using telfa pads on the wound, gauze to hold the pads in place, then vetwrap over that. I would also start mine on an antibiotic and Meloxicam.

If not drinking and eating you will have to tube feed, and I can teach you how if it comes to that.

Great advice so far! Believe it or not, this is a great candidate for sugar wrapping. As others have said, clean the wound well with betadine (this often means using some gentle “elbow grease” to be thorough) and flush it well with saline. Plucking or trimming the feathers around the wound is important as it will help you see better and will prevent them from sticking when that starts to scab. You’re going to need to keep her indoors for a while, unfortunately.

Sugar wrapping is as simple as pouring fresh clean table sugar onto the wound, soaking some gauze in saline, and packing the gauze on top. Then firmly wrap with vetwrap (the type of wrap that sticks to itself, not feathers) and keep her away from flies and water.
Sugar is excellent for bite wounds like this where the skin no longer meets, as it promotes growth of granulation tissue and is a natural antibacterial, while also keeping the wound moist and minimizing “sloughing” of dead tissue when scabbing starts. Many have also used raw honey with success but I haven’t personally tried it.
Inbetween wrappings you could try letting her swim in a bathtub to try to keep sticky sugar feathers to a minimum.

Best of luck OP. Please keep us updated, regardless of what you decide to do. Wounds like this can seem crazy daunting, but we’re all rooting for your duck!

I could possibly take her to the uni vet (the only one that specialises in birds as well as other animals) I just don’t know how much it will cost. And when I go out and check her, I’ll bring her inside and clean her in warm water if that’s ok. And I’ll make sure to pluck? the feathers out on and around the wound.

I don’t think we have any betadine and saline, last time I checked we had old expired betadine that mum was making me use on a muscovy that got attacked by a fox who had similar problems as the one I have now does, except she was very weak and had punctures. Also I’ll try and get a weight but I’m not sure if we have a scale.

Here is some wound care info from an avian vet book. It's a little dated, so doesn't mention sugar wraps, but the rest of it is still considered okay I think.

Normal saline is a mixture of salt and water. It is called normal because its salt concentration is similar to tears, blood and other body fluids (0.9% saline). It is also called isotonic solution. Normal saline is soothing and will not burn or sting when applied. It is used for:

  • rinsing contact lenses
  • rinsing the nasal passages (nasal irrigation)
  • cleansing the bladder (bladder irrigation)
How to make normal saline solution at home
Saline solution is easy to make at home. You will need:

  • one clean glass bottle or jar with lid
  • table salt
  • pot with lid
  1. Put one cup of water and ½ teaspoon of salt into the pot. Put the lid on.
  2. Boil for 15 minutes with the lid on (set a timer).
  3. Set the pan aside until cooled to a room temperature.
  4. Carefully pour the salt and water (normal saline) from the pan into the jar or bottle and put the lid on.
Normal saline solution: A few important points
  • It is very important to use only fresh normal saline. Bacteria can grow in saline and cause infections
  • Use a clean glass jar or bottle is that has been recently washed in a dishwasher with very hot soapy water
  • Do not drink solution
  • Throw away the solution if it grows cloudy or looks dirty
  • Keep the saline in a bottle or a glass for a maximum of 24 hours. Throw away any unused solution, wash the container, and make a new solution.
