GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Pics
The pics didn't need much editing at all just resizing and I was to tired to do anything else and can't get the TV to show the show I wanted to see so I edited the pics

This shows poco's new restraining method, the bands around the feet and wings are hair bands, the larger head band around wings secured to a velco strap, clamped to the table top. The loop she made was simple and effective and I forgot to get close up pics of how it was done, but I will try and do that over the next few days.

Again trying to show position if you follow straight down from her thumb you will see a red dot (where a feather was plucked) it is hard to see but if you look closely that is a valley that follows a curve, that is where the inscision is made

Beginning of the cut

Another view of the valley, this is the other side so feathering is different and landmarks, you can see the valley better it is at the base of that wet dark feather and follows the rib curve.

How the retractor is placed and used

This pic shows the view when you can see both testes from the same opening. See the probe in the hole, just under the probe is the upper teste, just over the probe is the lower teste. In the pic it looks roughly the same depth, but it was not.

Next set This is a sequence shot of removing the teste w/ the thread tool, I have another sequence set coming up next.

This is what you will see before the "film" layer is broken and cut or moved out of the way. See the tool w the hole in the top, left of the pic, that is the thread tool.

This is what you see when it is removed. See the pale thing in the center of the hole, that is the crown jewel you are looking for.

This tool has the tread attatched and she is working the tool around the loose end of the testes while keeping the thread held in place. She is attempting to encircle the teste w/ the thread.

Here you can see she has hold of the thread in the same position she inserted the tool, and now has worked the tool around to where you see it, dragging the thread under the teste to get both sides of thread (tool side and thumb side) to the point where the teste is joined to the body

Here they meet up and form a closed loop around the connecting point

No longer connected it just popped right out.

See just to show no tricks we didn't just put someone else's teste on this bird (
gig.gif
) no teste left in the hole.

Great pictures! Was this the upper or the lower testicle?

Okay second sequence set, in this set I think you get a better understanding of the thread and tool interaction

See the tool beginning to loop the thread under the free side of the teste, thread is being held taught.

Tool has been scooped and slid around the teste towards the thread tail

They are coming to meet at the connecting point

being lifted up and out

Almost there

Out whole

Upper. We were not successful removing both from one insicion on any bird today, all were cut twice. We both have some breeds that tend to have testes attatched at both ends, we have not found anyway to remove both on those birds (w/ one cut) w/o bleeding out problems. A couple like this one we were able to see both testes but couldn't remove the lower one.

All cuts were left unstitched this time and sprayed w/ this 1 spray per cut. Poco has used this already and says it is awesome and w/I 2 days they will have a complete and healing scab.

I was wondering if you were able to get to the lower one with the thread tool. I think that is what the Chinese caponizers were doing in some photos I saw in another thread.

I am done with my caponizing till next year. I've got to butcher slips tomorrow, since they have started crowing. How old are your oldest capons? I think mine are 25 weeks old....the white hatchery ones. The broody hen ones are 23 weeks, and the incubator ones are 19 weeks, I think.

I have some of that, and it works great on a lot of stuff. You can even put it in the eye. I know people who use it on cuts and scraped of their own.

I haven't been stitching mine.....I have used superglue....LockTite, I think. It looks like you can make a much smaller incision with the Chinese tools, so I can see where stitching or glueing wouldn't be necessary. That saves a lot on time.

The thread is what they use on the lower teste, however even w/ that tool the one cut caponizing is a skill that has alluded both of us to this point.

I had a tragic event at my place last week and lost all but 4 hens and 8 babies to a preditor attack while we were both gone for the day. (as in 24 hour day). mine were just at 6 months. These ones I did today (just 3 of my own and helped w/ poco's) 2 will be going to a fellow Okie byc'er as "pets" since they are offspring of my main roo Oreo, somewhat of a celebrity on the Okie thread. I am switching my flock entirely to NN (even before this event) so didn't need Oreo's offspring (he was an EE) I lost some very important birds to my breeding goals. I didn't have many eggs since my husband had gone on a family camping trip and took the eggs for everyone to eat. I put what I could salvage in the bator and have my fingers crossed, I will candle on the 6th.

Oh, Kassaundra, I am SO sorry! That has got to be horrible! I can't even imagine. I hope your eggs hatch well. Do you know what type of predator?

As far as the caponizing from one side, those blood vessels between the two testicles are really hard to avoid....I don't know how those Chinese guys just seem to reach in a snatch them out of there. I don't know if I have the nerve to try to caponize a three week old cockerel, though. I am going to try to only restrain the one leg next time. It looked like that was what you did this time. Did that seem to help with visualization?
