GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Cool i might try it with some of my older birds because if i did that i could keep them around and wouldn't have to worry about them getting out and killing each other
but it kinda makes them useless because i use them for breeding

Mix breed capon at 14 weeks (white). The black one next to him is 4 weeks older and just now showing that he is a he! He is due for caponizing as soon as I get a good table for the precedure. Should be next week I hope. He will be the oldest I've done and I'm a bit nervous.....but I will update before and after precedure.

Capon Update:
Caponized at 6 1/2 weeks old; current age 17 weeks.
These were "meal maker" birds, so I am only guessing as to the breed.

Pleased to see no maturation, so neither seem to be a slip.

They look great. The barred bird has filled out nicely and the BJG will take some more time. BTW the pic comparing your BJG is a female!!!

Well, I suppose 'he' doesn't look like her either!

So, I'm sloppy about lifting photos off the internet. I searched for "Black Jersy Rooster'; but as I looked through the results, I guess, I was more focused on pose for comparison.

Set up and ready to go! I have three boys that are ready. One is a bit bigger than I would like, but we'll give it a shot, it's better than his alternative! I am going to do the big guy first. Wish me luck.

So I did the big guy first. As soon as I made the first incition I knew something wasn't right. He bled like crazy, before I even made the incision into the muscle. I kept an eye on him and tried to continue, but it became clear pretty fast that it wasn't going to happen this time. So I put him back with some food and water and he seems to be doing fine. I gave him the vitamin K just as I have before, so I'm not sure what happened.....

Any way by this time I had wasted quite a bit of time, so I got the second fellow who is about 9 weeks old. His precidure went smooth after I got him calmed down, he was panicky and I had to let him have a few minutes after he was restrained! After he calmed it went quick, both testicles removed fully and he is recovering.

I did not have time to do the third bird. He is the same age as the second one so I will try to do him in the next couple of weeks. All in all I guess it wasn't half bad, although I feel bad I put the big guy through all of that for nothing. I'm not sure I will have the guts to try him again.

Thank you Kassaundra! I sure appreciate the support here, no one else can understand but other crazy chicken people!

I don't think I will be tackling older birds again for a while. The older fellow will just see the pot a bit sooner, with far less meat than I was hoping for.
They both seem to be doing good so far. All three were happy to see food and water again......I think that is the hardest part!
