My cat left this on the porch for me sometime today...what is it??

Looks like a stoat to me!

Either a short tailed weasel (ermine) or long tailed weasel. The black tail tip is missing. I think an ermine and stoat (UK) are the same thing.
The ermine is smaller than the long tailed. Hard to tell without scale in the picture.
But.... Good kitty. Pretty bad a$$ if you ask me.

Well for scale...the board it is laying across is a standard decking board...
I would say this creature is maybe... +/- 4 inches long.

I set mousetraps in our garage throughout the winter as the field mice try to find warmer places to stay. We usually catch 3-4 a night. For about 3 weeks - no mice. Then we caught the ermine in mousetrap. He was hunting mice. Once I caught the ermine - the mice were back.

Yes good kitty indeed!! She likes to show off her trophies...this is the first of these I've seen her bring home.

Oh wow...so I'm assuming not necessarily a threat to the adult birds, but definitely any chicks.
