I have never been a fan of grass, that is just one of the many reason we chose this property because we wouldn't have to deal with grass, even when I got my first gosling 7 yrs ago I still didn't think about grass. He ate what the ducks ate and has been a healthy boy, Now fast forward 2yrs ago and 6 weeks ago. I am obsessed with grass I have planted some fesue [red and winter rye] but would like to know what is the best grasses for geese to graze on, I have found a spot I can fence in [that will keep out the chickens] but need some info on the best grasses to put down. I have 2 other areas that I am growing now of the red fescue and winter rye because they are pretty shady. this new place i want to put down seed is in the sun. So what grass do ya'll use to for your geese? I have been reading on line but can't find anything about grass and geese that tells me.

Here I have zoysia japonica, a lawn grass, which they eat. they love what seems to be a type of crowsfoot grass, they really like the seed heads, and even better, they love the brachiaria that grows in the bog.... this one has shortish leaves that grow along a stem, but it´s lush.

Actually, they are picky. Wild geese migrate, and as they move along they´ll be picky...they´ll eat Rye grass readily. There´s a type of grass that isn´t good for geese...
A couple weeks ago when I was doing research on line about grasses I saw this grass you are talking about livin and I could kick myself for not book marking it because now i can't find it. I believe it's a fescue too.

I've read that fescue grass is just fine for geese to eat. Mine also seem to enjoy clover and short-stemmed sweet grasses. I know that not all grasses contain the same amount of nutrients. Some are higher in protein than others. I used to have the name of good website on geese. If memory serves me correctly (oftentimes is does not), I believe it was offered by The University of Minnesota but don't quote me on that.

Well I am going to stick with fecues they like it and it seems to grow well here i now have another area fenced off from the ducks and hope to put the grass seed down tomorrow before the rain starts. Thanks will have to check about sweet grass.

I do not know whether it can harm geese or not but Kentucky 31 fescue is known for having a toxic endophyte fungus which has caused health problems in livestock. Turf type ryegrass can sometimes have a fungus also but pasture type is OK. Kentucky bluegrass and orchard grass are good pasture grasses. Geese like clover also. Clover is a legume and can add nitrogen to the soil which helps the grass to grow.

Thanks for the info, that is what i was looking for just couldn't remeber the name of the grass. my geese have been eating Perennial rye gosh I hope it's okay for them to eat. Also Winter rye grass. I have also planted lots of clover but they prefer grass over it.
