Oh my :-( I'm so sorry! I hope everyone improves!! As far as lice, it doesn't necessarily relate to bedding. When a bird is sick, of course, they don't dust bathe and preen like they would. So it definitely gives lice/mites a chance to get out of control. Everything I've read says if your bird has large amounts of them, wonder what else is wrong with them.

1) You need to buy your chickens a complete diet. The cost of the feed will be greatly less than that of the cost of medication and vet trips in the long run. Pellets smell "bad" because they are a dry mix of several crucial ingredients. The "crude protein" is simply the percentage of protein in the feed not some obscure ingredient. Chickens need at least 16% protein.

2) Epsom salt baths will not cure lice like a chemical does. At best it drowns the adults. Without changing the bedding the lice problem is not being fully combated.

3) Both Giardia and Typhoid are transmittable from animals to humans and humans to animals. It comes through uncleanly housing, feed and water.

4) Kindly resolve their moldy coop. A coop should never be moldy.

I have never had pellets smell bad at all, only a nice grain-y fresh smell. Maybe she got a spoiled bag??

OP---so sorry about your situation. I'd think that resolving the mould issue alone would do wonders for their health. Maybe spend a weekend with a bleach solution and a scrub brush? Does the coop leak? Maybe you could put some tarps up, to keep the bedding dry at the very least. Giving them a dry place to stand might help.

My babies are on the mend! Thank you all for your help. Don't mean to be snarky, but my chickens get a complete diet. Commercial feed is basically grain, sawdust, chicken meal, and drugs. If you're ok with that, good for you. I'm not gonna get preachy. Wish you wouldn't.
