He followed easily, glad to be free of the little stall if only for a moment.
 
Zils walked backwards to the rear of her stall, calculating what distance she had to run at what speed and when she had to jump if she were to clear the gate in front of her. Given her puny size, there was enough room for her to take a running jump. And given the shortness of her legs, it would be nearly impossible to get over the gate with no injuries. But she didn't dwell on that fact, and as she started running the only thing on her mind was how to escape the farmhands once she was out.
It turns out that you need long legs to jump something so high.
With a sickly crack that echoed throughout the entire barn, Zils' shoulder hit the gate hard. As the small mare tumbled down onto her knees in the straw, she was quiet.
 
Marie shot to window in her stall and looked at the mare, "Zil!? Zil!!"
