Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I think my "plant on a rock" is working! I see roots growin right along the rock where it touches the side of its clear container, about 3" below the surface. I cut an inch off of the container today. So far, so goofy! I mean good!
Cool! Can't wait to see it once it starts really going well!

A before pic

This is today's start, when it is finished it will be a composite of several ideas. Hugelkulture, keyhole, and underground rabbitry. We will be using mostly recycled, repurposed things. The hugelkulture part is going to be backfilled w/ wood, the keyhole (though not that shape) will be the retaining wall portion, and then in the garden there will be underground rabbit dens to help keep meat rabbits nice and cool in our evil summers.

Well I got catalogs for berries in the mail and they look good and cheaper. Though I don't know what size plants they are either.

No put the hoses away so I've got to wait for things to warm up in a few days to do it. Ugh!

I also have to put more plastic up around the chicken runs.

What kind of berries are you getting?

I'm wanting to get blueberries this year for sure and maybe start a strawberry bed, but only if I get a chance to make the bed on the strawberries.

I'm looking at more Raspberries and perhaps some Blue Berries. I'd also like some Red Gooseberries.

The company is Indiana Berry & Plant Co. I don't recall ordering the catalog but I'm glad I got it.

They have a nice selection of varieties. Plus information on planting. I believe in NOT putting all my eggs in one basket and planting different varieties. I figure if one doesn't do well another might.

Local prices here were high this year. If Country Max has a sale I missed it. Though local stores only carry certain varieties.

MIne is mostly cleared out now, but I have a ton of raspberries to move and make a blueberry bed for spring, and a large hugelkulture bed to make w/ 5 rabbit dens in the bed itself. I also am working of winter sowing the tomatoes this year, so I need to get those areas finished and ready to sow the seeds by January.

My left shoulder has been hurting for months and I haven't been doing as much. I hate to mention it.

I have been looking at catalogs though. I like to try new varieties of things. I brought the Geraniums in and there are flowers on one of them. I'm surprised as they are in an unheated room.

Rabbit Dens? What's that all about?

I was researching ideas for gardening in drought conditions since our area is in a several year exceptional drought and no signs of relief and came across hugelkulture gardening (raised bed w/ wood filler). I had also been researching raising meat rabbits and found out how heat sensitive they are and how in third world countries where they need cheap easy ways to raise meat for their families and have hot environments they make rabbit dens underground to make them much cooler. So I decided to combine the two and make cement dens in the center of a large hugelkulture bed, two birds and one stone type of thing. I hope to have them going by early/mid spring.

I figure food prices aren't going to get better. The more I do the less I buy. I just need to learn about storage.

As for rabbits. I was asked by my barber if I knew anyone who raised meat rabbits. His uncle was looking to find rabbit meat but there was none in the store. So you might be onto something.

I wonder if some of the new hybrid veggies and things are developed for "perfect" conditions as to the heritage better for "normal" conditions.

For you drought , you might consider saving rain water and stocking it up.
