Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I started some last minute winter seedlings. Apparently I can still put them out until mid February... so we're trying! It's nice to have something green sprouting in my bathroom window. They're about an inch tall. Some old lettuce seed, some old Brussel sprout seed, some fresh cabbage seed and some fresh escarole seed. I never had a winter garden in Alabama, and I know I certainly should have tried in fall instead, but dangit, I had to grow *something* or I was going to end up starting my summer seeds way too early.

I've already ordered my seeds for this summer.. Luckily I can start planning early here. Some of it can be grown indoors as early as February, so yay!

I'm planning on getting a nice herb area started this year, kitchen herbs as well as medicinal... hoping to attract some polinators and natural predators. Ofcourse, I have WAY too much of everything. What the heck is someone going to do with 250 cumin seeds? Haha May have to have a little seed swap or something.

I've gotten my seed from Annie's heirlooms and I bought a two year 'seed of the month' subscription on Black Friday for a bargain.

I'm certainly excited and can't wait for all this cold to go away. The weather is extremely cold for this area. We never have this much frost in Alabama. Guess this will mean less mosquitoes next year?

My daughter called from TX and complained it was so cold. 59*. It's been below zero here in Syracuse. 59 ? and I'd be working outside.

My poor roosters have sustained a bit of frost bite.

I've been making jams to empty the freezer of berries picked last summer.

Latest was Gooseberry/Raspberry/currant. It came out very good from what I'm told. I have my own "test kitchen" at the school where I volunteer.

I did make a Gooseberry/ginger and that was good too. Though not my favorite.

I've started my own plants but they're not doing good. I did plant Rhubarb but it all died. It's so wet here I need to keep planting it in different spots to see where it will grow.

Which reminds me I need to order more roots.

Enjoy the day,

Rancher

Don't know what part of texas your daughter is in but it has been in the 20's here, my peafowl have a layer of ice on them from the freezing rain that is finely thawing and I believe I have lost all my citris trees

I haven't seen this kind of weather for days sense 1997 all my winter garden looks wilted but it might bounce back.

She's in the Houston area. I've learned quite a bit about the South and the cold weather they get.

I never realized that CA got snow til being a member of BYC.

Folks here really do a service on educating others by being members. I appreciate that.

I live 100 mile east of Houston, yesterday it warmed up and thawed out everything and it is 48 degrees right now but another artic cold front is coming i can feel it in my bones.

Mt Shasta in California has snow on it year round or at least it did 40 years ago when i was in that area.

Beautifl , i plant lots of sunflowers, the mexican reds are my favorites but i like growing the giants for my peafowl

I also plant wild flowers for my birds

These wild flowers and clovers are every where, i love them

Well I could be glad for 40* weather here for a while. 50* and I'm in the garden.

Now I know snow is important for y'all so I hope you get lots of it. In fact as much as I'd like to say you can have ours, we need a bit too. First year in this house we had one day we got 4'.

I would like a dry summer but not to dry.

We're in central Alabama and it's been rediculously cold for our area. Going to go down to like 6F again next week. Snow predicted.... Never seen so much frost in this area.
