Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

Totaly disgusted here in central Va. the James is frozen in a lot of places and the canal (downtown RVA has snow blowing across it. It is the cold that is getting to me more than the snow, thank goodness we are having a little warm up over the weekend!
My horse is grumpy, my cats are grumpy and my hens just keep on laying! Guess who is the favorite pet this month?

I am totally disgusted as well. I can't believe we still have to get through all of February.

Well at least it ain't frozen for 6 mo of the year. Lord have mercy, seems like I just get into the swing of things and summers over. I love spring cuz it's a new beginning. I had fall cuz it's like death is at the door.

One of the reasons I love Va. Just heard another forecast that Feb. will be one of the coldest on record. Don't think 2 cats 7 hens and a horse will fit in my jetta wagon.

They love the garden, even when it is covered.

Try this, I snow blow paths for them to walk on. This pic is last year. I didn't this year since the black birds show up to well and I lost one to a migrating Falcon. It's been colder than usual and not as much snow. I fear a dry summer. My garden is fenced in so they can't get to it. First year they decimated the tomatoes and ate anything they could.

I keep the pictures cuz they inspire me.

I take the fence down in winter, the have supervised visits in the summer, the love the plants. But also when it gets silly hot the get between the beds, in the shade.
I never thought of it, but I could use my leaf blower to make paths. We are having a thaw this weekend.

In the summer my white birds are the target of choice for predators... I think they felt special with the snow. They were the only two to get out and walk in the snow

I had a fox snatch my only light sussex. I followed the feathers into the woods and in short found her. The fox must decided she was too heavy and left her. I picked her up and brought her home still alive. She recovered and is a good layer. I hope she goes broody again.

I've had two birds now, both attacked by a hawk. Both made it. Last one is still molting, but she's healed up... will take her a while to start laying I fear. She used to be my heaviest chicken (probably her saving grace) and now she's the lightest... her drop in rank on the chicken pecking order has not been kind to her.

I sowed some flower seeds indoors today as they have a long germination time.. I loved having my hands back in dirt and getting those dirty fingernails! Later in the day I blew my nose and what do you know.. more dirt lol. Spring can't come soon enough!
