Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

ahah, I see... not enough light. thats probably it then. You should see how tall my basil sprouts are. Ok, should I start over or is the height thing workable?

I can transport my seedling trays outside every day I guess, and back in at night (we are just starting to get cooler weather).

If your plants haven't broke off, they might be saved by giving them more light. Also, when you start taking them outside, let them harden off, before you leave them out all day. To harden your plants, start by taking them out for a short period of time, and increase it a little each day.Be very cautious of setting your plants outside on windy days until they tough up, because they will be easy to break off. It might be best to start a few more in case these don't make it.

I hate to change subject of a sort but............

Who here grows herbs and what do you grow? See the thing is there are many herbs in the catalogs but Good garden o' peas, they never explain what and how to use them.

I kinda wish there was a recipe book for just herbs.

So why not do this? If you have a recipe that uses some unusual herb how about e-mailing the recipe to me? Even if it's your recipe or a hand me down. I'd like to know. Me and DW are trying to save money by doing a monthly menu. I have dedicated one of my gardens to just herbs, but Lord have mercy I've got about 5 beds of just garlic.

They've got about a bazillion kinds of basil, but what to use the tiny type of basil for? Do you get where I'm coming from?

Thanks so much, being a house husband and now dinner maker is not so easy.

Love ya,

Chef Rancher

I am starting my seeds this weekend. I have spring fever in the worst kind of way! I miss the color and the warmer temps, although this winter has been fairly mild, and to be honest I think it has made the longing for spring even worse!!! I can handle the season of winter when its snowing outside and I can bake all day in the kitchen with my children under my feet, but when it is 50 degrees one day and 30 the next it just makes me want to skip winter all together!!

Rancher, basil can be added to soups, stews, salad, and like oregano compliments tomato based dishes. I grow sweet basil and purple, and just add a little if it is fresh, more if it is dried.

ozark_chickies is correct. Herbs are used mostly to add or enhance flavors. So you'll not find a lot of herb recipes. However you'll find a lot of recipes that use herbs. Even French Onion soup uses beef stock as the base for the broth.

My green thumb is itching like crazy. I know from past experience that if I start things in the green house now, they will get all gangley before I can actually put them outside. Come on Ides of March

on another Forum for gardening my Screen name is Dr.Greenthumb...lol I am very much looking forward to spring. 3 Months ago I planted 172 cloves of garlic and I am not so patiently waiting for the snow to melt so they can start to pop the soil.

Plus I have a organic garden that's about 50x25 that we plant a lot of veggies. Here's a few random garden pics from last year, I have tons. Last pic everythig you see came from the garden that morning and went into a soup for dinner.
