Well the garden and chickens survived the storm. That tornado hit just about 2 miles from here.
Put up my second batch of sauce last night, man is that a lot of work. My problem is I hate the clean up.
I thought that my girls weren't laying for me because of the hot weather well turns out they have been getting into my raised beds and laying them there. I found 7 eggs yesterday.what a waste. It's like a jungle in the one raised bed .my friend that built the cold frame for me just removed the windows instead of taking the whole frame off. Next year I have to take the whole thing off since I think I would also get better ventilation.
Off to get ready for a wedding,Happy gardening

Glad the tornado missed you. Mine aren't laying real well right now I think it is the heat we have had weeks and weeks of over 100 and a lot of over 110. I'm actively trying to bribe one or two to go broody when this heat breaks.

Galanie,   do you or someone you know in the houston area sell eggs?

DD and hers live in the Woodlands area and are looking to buy pastured or organic eggs from a local farm.

I normally do but because of broodiness and the heat, I'm not getting enough to sell lately. Sorry, don't know of anyone else selling them. Mine are not organic but are pastured, sort of. They spend all day on grass, about a dozen to a bit over a quarter acre.

Nope not yet! My hubby and I will be getting them in the spring next year (if i can't convince him to get them earlier).

I've answered a few ads on CL in the area but no contacts yet. Pastured is fine with me and them as long as they aren't fed lots of other stuff.

rbyn - it's smart to get things set up first. I know folks who didn't have things secured and lost their first batch of birds. As a rule I don't sell to people who aren't ready for them. Never put the cart before the horse, or the chickens before the coop.

When you're ready , there are plenty who will enable your addiction.

Rancher, some of us are planning a trip to the state fair for next year so we will get to meet...one of the ladies went up to the Erie county fair this weekend and I asked her if they sell Cornell chicken( bakers chicken) or if she has ever had a spiedi but of course not. These long islanders just haven't lived.
Went out this morning and caterpillars have destroyed my lettuce. (have to keep true to the thread.) lol

LOL thanks rancher! yeah that really is the holdup. we don't have the coop yet and don't have the funds right now to build one. i keep scouring craigslist for free (or really cheap) stuff to use but haven't found anything that i like quite yet in the area *sigh*. The search continues...

Well let me offer some unsolicited advice. If you have a Home depot near by they sell "cull" lumber and you might find some plywood, 2x4x48" or other things you can use. That's where I got lots of stuff for my coop and nest boxes and other things. I just keep stopping to check and save up til i have enough for my project. Being on a fixed income I thank God for them.

You can also fine those pallets and take those apart to design a coop. My next door neighbor has a garden shed made out of pallets and it looks rustic but nice.

Then there was the guy who scored an old dresser and converted that into a coop. He lived in NYC. I'm just full of ideas (and something else) so I'm told.

Queen - do you mean "this" year? To the fair? You might try a spray of soapy water on the lettuce. It's not to late to try again. Or cover the bed with an old lace curtain. Or sprinkle the bed with crushed up egg shells.
