Greens when grass is gone

You can sprout almost any kind of seeds that have not been treated with a sprout inhibiter.
I buy wheat berries, whole oats, and other seed from the co-op or directly from the feed mill in 50lb bags. I have sprouted scratch but the seeds in it don't all sprout at the same time and some don't sprout at all.
If you don't have many birds and you just want to sprout for treats, you can buy lentils, blackeyed peas, whole barley or other grains/beans from your local grocery store. There are lots of good articles here on BYC that will instruct you how.

I'm thinking you may have meant to tag @Texas Kiki! I want to say sometimes with Polish the crest is an issue when it comes to eating, but I'm not sure. @CapricornFarm might know.

i trim her so she can see cause thats what i thought it was. but nope. lol yesterday she bit some cucumber but never ate it. just went to her feed and ate it.

Hey guys! another question for yall. I have my chickens in a run and they have almost eaten all of their grass and what is left that they havnt eaten has turned brown due to all the cold weather. They have a mix of chick feed and flock raiser free choice, as well as a little bit of scratch and mealworms. Should i be giving them greens, fruits, and veggies DAILY to supplement them? or just the kitchen scraps we have every now and again? Thanks in advance!

I am going to say no.
Feeding them a complete poultry feed ONLY is best.
If you must feed them treats keep the treats limited to a tiny amount and not daily but weekly.

That's like a kid picking broccoli over cotton candy! If she's eating her regular food well, I wouldn't worry. I rarely give mine treats.

From all the various university papers I've read about supplemental greens and sprouts/fodder, you want to keep it below 20% of their whole diet. And treats/scraps you want to keep below 10%. They love treats but letting them eat treats all the time is like Honey Boo Boo's mom letting her eat only chips and candy, and you can see what it did to that poor girls health!

She is smart! She knows what is better for her to eat.

I give my flock zero treats.

I give mine greens at least once a week. Not sure if they need them but they sure do enjoy them. Rabbits too.
