The wife and I are embarking on our third careers as full-time homesteaders. We plan to raise layers and meat birds, as well as a variety of hoofed livestock, bees and crops. We've never had chickens before and I have't been this clueless about a new project in many years. Will be reading much before asking questions to avoid massive duping.

We are in southern NH, which gets wicked cold in the winter. We have chosen a spot for the coop just east of a stand of birch trees which will provide summer shade and a bit of a windbreak. But all our land is quite hilly, so there isn't a flat spot to be had. In warm weather we would like to free range in the sheep pasture to help keep the insects down, but I'm worried about death from above from the neighborhood. hawks and owls. The coop will be totally secure, with a roof over the run. I'm looking at total dimensions of 8' x 20' for the coop and run combined.

That's all I know now. I hope to know more soon. Thanks for putting on a great forum.
