Grey blob + grey veining on outer shell, UPDATED GRAPHIC

No bad egg, no smell, the mark was where the yolk was. The babies butt was sat next to the air sac, and the tiny beak had pierced the inner membrane, so basically little chick hadn't turned round and was at the wrong end of the egg to breathe.

This was what I found:

So sad for the loss of your chick, poor little thing. I agree with Roccomanchickens ..... so close and yet so far.

Hi

Sorry to hear that you got that close. At least you know what happened by taking the time to examine the egg. Appreciate you taking such a clear picture and sharing it for future reference. Not easy when you're disappointed but so important for future reference.

Thank you

Pete

However, thank you for posting the picture.
It is an incredible picture and is really a neat picture of a chick in an egg, well membrane at least. I am just facinated by it, you just really never get to see a chick at that stage of its life.

So, for future reference, should we know based on where the chick pipped the shell that it was turned around wrong? And if that is the case, it was in the wrong spot, should we help the chick out of the shell?

Quote:
This chick didn't pip the shell which is why it died, it broke through the inner membrane to try and breathe from the air sac which it hadn't turned round to, but it wasn't visible on the outside that it had done anything at all.
If your chick has pipped the shell it can breathe so its a very different situation altogether.
I'm not sure there is really anything to learn from this other than what a fully developed chick looks like before it hatches and that these things happen sometimes.
It looks so real and alive in the picture, unlike other pictures of dead in egg chicks which look grey and washed out, this one looks like it should start breathing any second. So sad but unfortunately thats the way of things sometimes, hopefully I'll have better luck next time.
