Grit for chicks

So I just gave my 1 week old chicks some sand for some Grit.
They went ballistic!
It was pure mayhem!
Then I got to wondering if they would fill up on sand and not eat.
Can I mix the sand with their food?
The floor in the brooder is a small mesh so I can't just throw it on the ground.

They could fill up on it, yes, take it away before they can.
They don't need grit if they are just eating their chick food. Do not mix it in their food.

I didn't mean to scare you, it shouldn't be a problem but chicks have 0 self contol.

Yes they can gorge on it. So I would limit how much of it they can eat, until they learn to regulate themselves better. With chicks I do sprinkle a tiny bit on their food every few days instead of giving them a dish of grit, to prevent them from gorging.
