Grit for young chickens ?

Our oldest is about 8 weeks old, they are out in their coop, but we haven't let them out in the run yet since we don't have it secured properly.
We have alot of sand in our yard, sandy soil.. Is sand a good form of grit ? would it be ok to offer the chicks some sand in their coop to get them started ?

As long as they are on chick starter they don't have to have grit, but if you give them scratch or other hard grains or treats they need grit or at least access to natural grit in the run.

Ok... right now the only treats we give them is a mixture of Chick crumbles, yogurt & boiled egg ... !!! , Guess will not worry about grit ... they'll be out in the run
in about a week.
