GRIT, when do you give it????

I gave my chicks a pan of dirt to play in, they were able to scratch stuff out of it and they seemed to get all the grit they needed. After aabout two weeks I started putting them out in the tractor for limited periods on warm days.

Chicks should not have grit until they are eating other foods than the starter crumbles and when you feed it watch the calcium amount on it. I picked up what I thought was chick grit at TSC because it said CHICK Grit on the bag but it has a high calcium content in it and I am carefull how much I give them. I have been told that too much calcuim is not good on their kidneys. My girls are outside in a run all day that has a dirt floor and I think they get plenty of grit digging in the dirt for bugs. I just give them a little grit every other day or so. Trudy

Check with your feed provider too. I thought I'd need to offer it after 6 weeks when the chicks come off starter crumbles, but no, the brand I use (Atlantic Co-op) provides grit in all its feed and oyster shell as well in the layer ration. It also means that switching feeds can be problematic. So the answer isn't so easy...

FYI, until the girls start to play outdoors, the grit has been pulled from the menu!

And they looked so cute with all six sitting in the plate at the same time, I hated to pull it out of the coop (dog crate/brooder)
