I must be a misplaced Southerner! I LOVE grits with an over easy egg or two on the top...and LOTS of butter! MMMM--when I was milking cows on a split shift I would come home and make myself a big bowl and then nap and go back to work. Ahhh--the memories! Terri O in WI

We differentiate them here in the North. Grits are made and eaten soft like mashed potatoes and called grits. They are white. Polenta is cooked cornmeal, poured in a loaf pan, cooled, sliced and fried. It is yellow.
But maybe this is just in the north? I love grits, soft in a bowl but I dislike polenta...weird hey? They are both corn right?

I wasn't sure about Polenta. When I Wikipedia'd it, they photo they show is a mushy soft mess on a plate with meat loaf or something. Looked very "grit-like" to me! Maybe there's more than one way of preparing it and still calling it Polenta?

All I know is in all my cooking classes where I learned to cook Polenta they said it was not the same as cornmeal. So I guess that means since grits are white, it is different. I've never seen white Polenta. So interesting.... really isn't it all corn?

If I'm remembering correctly, grits are made from white corn - like hominy is white corn. Where as from what I saw/read polenta is yellow corn. still corn is corn.
