My grooming baby. We go back and forth on how long his coat should be in various locations. He has opinions that are different than mine, and then I have to balance the groom/look I want vs. the time I have available to achieve it. Anything over 6 hrs is more than either of us want to do. As he's gone from puppy to adult coat I've been cutting him shorter and shorter. Eventually the length of time he can go between brushing will equal the time I'm willing to put into it, and that will determine the length of his coat. He's very good, and we do all the things. No dye yet. I've had fun with nail polish, he's tolerated me having fun with the nail polish. He wears clothing well. Inevitably I finish his groom after dark, and he goes out in the rain before I get a picture of him all nice and fluffy.

I've always wanted a standard poodle, but I don't know if I would want all the coat care they require. Yours is gorgeous. Is he missing an eye?

Thanks. Nope, both eyes are present and functional, it's just a job and a half to keep his hair out of his eyes. I band his hair back, and he diligently pulls it back out of the bands as soon as my back is turned. Pics of him on the table/in my hand are before banding. Eventually I hope his adult coat comes in on his head enough that his hair will stick up instead of flopping into his eye, and I can just trim it short, but we're not there yet.

Even with research ahead of time, I drastically underestimated the grooming and brushing required. I do it, but OMG it's a lot. 2 hrs in the tub to bathe (2 separate shampoos and a conditioner), 4-6 hrs to HV blow out and groom (clippering, scissoring, clean feet/face/sanitary) every 4 weeks but preferably every 2 weeks, and that's not counting daily teeth brushing, nail trims/dremeling weekly, brushing everything every 3 days or so, etc. I totally understand why a lot of folks just shave them to 1/4" everywhere every 4-6 weeks, but I'm not quite ready to give up on our modified Miami yet. If I totally shaved him and kept him short, I could probably complete the groom in 4 hrs.

I'm a slow groomer because I like to do consent-based grooming and reward his compliance. He gets into the tub and walks up onto the grooming table on his own. He stands, turns, lies down, and puts his head down on his leg so I can reach all the areas I need to reach and so I can sit down while I dry and brush his head. We don't use any grooming loops or positioning tools, mainly because we don't need to, I just ask him to stand, turn, or lie down, and he does it. I love his temperament! And he loves his treats, so it's a win-win.

The grooming is the hardest part of owning a poodle, but he also needs several hrs of exercise a day, and lots of brain games and training. He is an inside dog, and when he stands his head is right above the dining room table, so his height has required some adjustment for us. He is brilliant, picks things up quickly and follows directions well, and does well with my young kids. There may be mud and grass all over my house, but there's not a bit of dog hair, and I like that too.

He knows our routines well, and thinks ahead. The other day, I told him to go potty, and he did, and then we played as a reward. It was our morning potty/play time, before I go to work. Then I told him it was time to go inside. Normally he immediately complies, but that time he stood there, looked at me, thought for a minute, and then trotted off to the corner where he poops, deposited his poop, and then ran up to the house. That dog heard my command to go inside and thought to himself "I haven't gone poop yet and I need to go - if I go inside right now, I won't get outside again for hours, so I'd better poop first" and then he went and did it!

I'm totally biased, but I think he's brilliant.

Standard Poodles are nice. So smart and no shedding is definitely a big win. I used to groom dogs. Only saw a handful of standards back than. Even just a shave down, and bath was a lot of work. I think at this point I just need to keep wishing and not get myself in too deep. I might be able to handle a miniature, had one as a kid, but the standard is too big for my bad back now. It's good you take things slow when grooming him, and make it enjoyable for him. If ever you require someone else to groom him he will be better prepared.
