Ground vs Wire

Understandable! What size of cages do you have? How many birds to a cage? Will you post pics of your set up? What do people with chickens and other poultry do in wet conditions? Quaillady says in her part of Florida the ground is pretty wet there too.

somewhere on another thread a few of mine are posted depends on species for most of your questions Dr Leyland Hayes books helped me a lot when I was setting up my cages

I can relate to what you're saying, I've lived in the Hampton Roads area a couple different times...soggy bottom has a whole new meaning.

Will you please post pics of your caged set up? And talk about floor area you have and how many birds you keep per cage?

If you find the University of Calis chukar raising paper they have several cages illustrated the pair/trio cages and the egg laying cages are the ones I use/built , my wife uses the camera at work she is a sales rep most days when she gets home it is dark and diffucult to get a piccy. I might get a picture taken this weekend probably not, I am in the middle of getting traps out for different folks with critter problems and finishing up prep for the upcoming fur season

O.K.
Here's my aviary. Dinky compared to the others, but I have a very small yard that also has a pool and 3 dogs that need space.

It sat for a few years empty. We got out the weeds and old sand, now i'm digging up and removing all the pipe from the old mist system and will replace it in the spring.

We are going to try and land scape and have a ton of wood and branches to add back in later. I still have alot of work to do! We will put rippled , fiberglass sheets over it in different shades of green and clear to allow sun and shade. And in the winter the whole thing gets wrapped in plastic.

It started out 2 , 4' square x 6' tall, that we eventually put together and took out the center to make one large 8' long, 4' deep and 6' tall, then we added the 4' x 3' deep box to the end. It has a small door so I can crawl in if need be.

It also has a safety porch/ wire enclosure so we can enter the entire aviary with no escapes!

I will be cutting out this inside area where there's a door, and closing off part of the porch area from the door to the left, to give us more space.

This last picture shows the area I will be cutting and using to close off some of the porch to give a little more space.

I can't wait to get it done! I've really missed not having birds outside!

Critter, thanks for the photos! That looks like a real cool set up and an awesome use of the space you have. Bet your quail will really enjoy the outdoors in their habitat. clever creating a porch so you can enter without worrying about escapees. One of the reasons I have an elevated threshold to step over is also to prevent escape artist from running under foot to get out.

You def have to post more as you complete your project and add your feathered friends.

Thank you!
It was originally used for parakeets and cockatiels, so the safety area was a must! It will be a mixed aviary again.

Your threshold was great thinking! The Coturnix and just big friendly clowns! I've had a few escape in the house just opening the cage because they are courious creatures and charge the door and want to be where my hands are. lol...

Thank you so much for your info on sanitizing! I see the product is an organic brand I trust and use around the yard for insects. I will look for some this weekend!

I will post as we get work done, it's been slow go. Hubby is working 12hr swing shifts, so I don't get to the back yard to work till after 1pm so he can sleep and then my son is home and before you know it, fixing dinner and dark.

This will house my "pets" egg layers.

Wow Critter, I will bet the parakeets and cockatiels loved that place! I know my parrots would love an outdoor aviary. Hmmmm.....maybe I could turn one of my quail aviaries into an outdoor parrot aviary!! LOL

But back to your aviary, looks like a very nice home for quail!! Good job!

Hi twocrows!
Yes they did! They chirped and sang and played all day! Doves too! I had so much fun with them! I can't wait to start again!
I've had these Aviaries since 1986, and have gotten alot of use out of them . They are starting to show their age, but still holding up pretty good!

I will hook the mist system up come spring. And will probably put in a drip for the plants. I hope the birds don't eat them too bad!!

Go ahead and add a few birds to yours! lol... You'd enjoy it i'm sure!

I took a break today. Tired and sore! LOL! I forgot how tough the wire is to work with. Not to mention my small hands have a hard time clamping the darn J clips ! the pliers open too wide. lol...
I got the small section of wall cut out and moved, and attached.

Today I planted a few of the plants and will get the rest done this weekend. I am going to put the ripple board like you use on top, but in fiberglass of diff. shades of green and clear to let light in for the plants.

Well...
Need to go clean some cages!
See you all soon.

As chicks they will be in the brooder then moved to a laying cage like these. I have enough built to house 288 birds. When breeding season is over I will put them in the big cage down in the basement. It is in last pic
