Since I live in the desert, the summer months are pretty barren here as far as nice greens go.

So, I grow many different types of "sprouts" for my girls.

This is Wheat Grass, it takes about 3 to 4 days to get this big

Then I put it in the Suet Feeders.

The girls LOVE to have sprouts of any kind! I try to give greens at least once a day.

And fresh greens every day give the eggs wonderful dark orange yolks

Wow, I love that idea! It looks great

Occasionally we let our chooks out to free range in the veggie patch... they always tear down my dad's hard gardening work but it's good for 'em I guess

There are special lids you can get at most "Health Food" type stores that are for making sprouts in canning jars.

But, you could just use a scrap of cheese cloth or any open weave fabric with the outer ring to hold it in place or even a rubberband would keep it in place on the jar.

Here is a link to the sprouting jar lids.

Here is what it looks like.

I have seen them with different size holes for different sizes of seeds.

Sprouts are the only "treat" my chicks gobble up every ay without fail!! They absolutely LOVE them. They even turn their nose up at meal worms, but sprouts makes them

Thanks for the idea about the suet feeders! That will be much better than just throwing the sprouts in the muddy run, which I have been doing.
